Esta carrera forma parte de la Fórmula 1 desde 1950, cuando se inició. Además del Gran Premio de Gran Bretaña, este circuito ha estado todos los años en el campeonato de Fórmula 1. Todas excepto cinco ediciones de este premio se han disputado en Monza, un autódromo inaugurado en 1922 para esta competición. En este lugar se han visto de las mejores carreras de todos los tiempos, sin embargo también se han realizado de los peores accidentes en la historia de este deporte. El circuito original comprendía un óvalo de 4,5 km y un circuito mixto de alta velocidad de 5,5 km. Actualmente se corre en el circuito mixto de 5,8 km, mismo que tiene agregadas chicanas.
